WPA VETERANS' CEMETERY PROJECT

The Macoupin County Archives has in its files, indexes/listings of many veterans buried in numerous Macoupin County cemeteries. WPA workers compiled the indexes during the Depression Era (about 1939-1940). The cemeteries below were checked for veterans and I found there was also other information that a genealogist might find useful.
As in previous issues of the Macoupin County Searcher, I listed veterans* information from both typed sheets and work sheets. The work sheets are typed in bold and the typed sheets are typed in a normal font. In some cases the work sheet had additional or conflicting information from the typed sheets. The work sheets with soldier information stated to check these sources: burial plot, cemetery record, death certificate or burial permit, patriotic organization (name), official U. S. records or other. These sources would probably be good sources to check still, today, as we have no way of knowing how thorough the WPA workers were. In these records, as always, I try to keep the spellings "as is" even if it appears incorrect.

Notes:   Benjamin Kid owned the land when the cem. was laid off for a cem. He deeded it to the Asbury Church about 1848 consisting of 1 acre. The second deed was made about 1881/1885 by J. W. Henderson to Macoupin County. This cemetery is in the Southwest corner of the SE 1/4 of the NE 1/4 of section 20 town 11 range 9 consisting of a track of land 18 rods square. The church is on this track of land.

The Asbury Mound Cemetery was first laid out by the people of that community who had a desire to erect a church and also lay out a plot of ground for a cemetery. This cemetery is the property of the Asbury Chapple of the Methodist Episcopal Church and was laid out in 1849.

HISTORY

The Asbury Chapel of Methodist Episcopal Church adjoins the cemetery. It is situated about 30 feet west of the original cemetery. It was built by the Methodist denomination. Charles Maxfield and his wife and Nathan Henderson and his wife were the first members and they were from the "Hermitage Society" in Greene County. The first to join the church were Samuel Rees and his wife, J. B. Steidley and wife, John Henderson and wife, David Henderson and William Taggert and his wife.

John Henderson, the donor of the addition to the Asbury Mound Cemetery was born in Berkeley County, Virginia. In 1830 he came to Macoupin County and settled in Section 20 of Barr Township. At the same time his brother David came to this county and settled on Section 30 of Barr Township. These were the first two settlements made in the southwest part of the township. Like all the early pioneers they settled near a timber where they would be protected against the wind and where the soil of the timber could be more easily worked than that of the hard prairie. The land was clay and high and the western portion along Taylor Creek was covered with a heavy growth of timber. The eastern and southeastern part was at that time covered with oak and cotton wood trees. Mr. Henderson commenced at once to clear the land of timber and build their log cabin which were crude structures with very little light and no floor. Gradually the land was cleared and tilled into fine farm land. Through his efforts and hard work, Mr. Henderson became the owner of a large productive farm.

In 1849, Benjamin Kidd deeded 3/4 of an acre of his land to the trustees on which to build their church and also lay out their cemetery. The deed conveying the title to the land over to the trustees reads as follows: THIS INDENTURE made this 11th day of March 1849 between Benjamin Kidd and Hannah, his wife, of the first part and the trustees of Asbury Chapple of the Methodist Episcopal Church of the second part, all of the County of Macoupin and State of Illinois. WITNESSETH that for and in consideration of the sum of $10.00 to them in hand paid by the said party of the second part, the receipt thereof is hereby acknowledged have this day granted, bargained and sold and do hereby grant, bargain, sell and convey to the said party of the second part the following described tract, lot or parcel of land lying and being in the County of Macoupin and State of Illinois and bounded as follows; viz:
Commencing at the SW corner of the SE 1/4 of the NE 1/4 of Section 20, T. 11 N. R. 9, West of the Third Principal Meridian and thence East 13 rods; thence North 9 1/2 rods to a stake; thence West 13 rods to a stake; thence South 9 l/2 rods to the place of beginning, containing 3/4 of an acre more or less and also the right of a carriage way straight out to the east line. And the said party of the first part doth WARRANT and DEFEND to the said party of the second part and their successors in office forever a fee simple right or title to the same tract or parcel of land against the claims of all persons whatsoever. IN TESTIMONY WHEREOF we the said party of the first part have hereunto set our hands and affix our seal this day and year above written. (This deed is dated March 11, 1849 and was recorded in the office of the Recorder of Deeds for Macoupin County, Illinois in Book "R" of Miscellaneous Records at page 313 on August 1,1849.

Five days later Mr. Henderson made a deed for an additional tract of land for the Asbury Chapple grounds and cemetery. The deed transferring the title to the land reads as follows: THIS INDENTURE made this 16th day of March, 1849 between John Henderson and Catherine, his wife, of the first part and the trustees of Asbury Chapple of the Methodist Episcopal Church of the second part all of the County of Macoupin and State of Illinois; WITNESSETH that for and in the consideration of the sum of $ 1.00 to them in hand paid by the party of the second part, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged have thus sold and do hereby grant, bargain, sell and convey to said party of the second art (as is) and their successors in office forever the following described lot or parcel of land, situated, lying and being in the County of Macoupin and State of Illinois bounded as follows; viz:

Commencing at the SE. corner of the SW. 1/4 of the NE. 1/4 of Section 20, T.11 N. R. 9, West of Third Principal Meridian thence North 9 1/2 rods to a stake; thence West 8 1/2 rods to a stake; thence South 9 1/2 rods to a stake; thence East 8 1/2 rods to the beginning, containing 1/2 acre more or less; also right-of-way for carriages through his land westward to run along the north line of his now farm to said lot. And the same party of the second part and their successors in office a fee simple right to the same tract or parcel of land against the claims of all persons whatsoever. IN TESTIMONY whereof we have set our hands and affix our seal this day and year first above written. (This deed is dated March 16, 1849 and was recorded in the office of the Recorder of Deeds for Macoupin County, Illinois on August 1, 1849 in Book "R" of Miscellaneous Records at page 314.) *

On this land a frame church building was erected and the cemetery was laid out.

In 1881 an additional acre of land was deeded by James W. Henderson to the County of Macoupin for a graveyard which is a part of the Asbury Mound Cemetery. The Deed reads as follows; THE GRANTORS: James W. Henderson and Sarah J. Henderson, his wife for and in consideration of $50.00 in hand paid, CONVEY AND WARRANT to the County of Macoupin for the purpose of a Public Graveyard in the State of Illinois the following described, real-estate:

One acre out of the SW. corner of the SE. 1/4 of the NE. 1/4 of Section #20, T.11 N.9, West of Third Principal Meridian Provided that this is intended to convey an additional acre to the Graveyard already established in the corner of said tract forming a perfect square altogether, situated in the County of Macoupin in the State of Illinois hereby releasing and waiving all rights under and by virtue of the Homestead Exemption Laws of this State. (This deed is dated March 23, 1881 and was recorded in the office of the Recorder of Deeds for Macoupin, Illinois on August 16, 1882 in Book "DF" of Warranty Deeds at page 339.)

*The first deed, made by Benjamin Kidd, written in this history gives the exact description and location of this cemetery. The deed following the first made by John Henderson gives a location in a different quarter section thus putting the addition on the west side of the original and when the two locations are combined, the cemetery would be a rectangle about 145 feet by 592 feet. As this cemetery is actually square, the additional land is to the north of the first tract. The second deed is incorrectly drawn up. The third deed verifies the first that the cemetery is in the SW comer of the SE 1/4 of the NE 1/4 and also proves that the cemetery is square as drawn by the fieldman.

In 1938, a petition for incorporation was sent to the Secretary of State, the Honorable Edward J. Hughes requesting a charter. The petition reads:

The Asbury Mound Cemetery is in good condition. The driveway is in good condition although it is not a surfaced driveway. Few of the tombstones are down and need resetting.   A woven wire fence encloses this burial grounds on three sides and a hedge fence is on the west half side of the cemetery or on the Northwest corner.

To reach the Asbury Mound Cemetery one must travel 1/4 mile West from Barr Store on a country road then South 1 1/2 mile and then west 1/2 mile to the cemetery. The cemetery lies near the road on the north side.

There are 9 veterans buried in the Asbury Mound Cemetery.

MCGS Editor's note: For this cemetery there are two typed lists with veterans' names. Although the names appear to be the same men on the two lists, there are a few differences. I am listing both lists of names. The names and information in boldface are from the handwritten work sheets.
