To reach Bethel Ridge Cemetery, one must travel about 8 miles east from Carlinville on State Route 108, 2 miles North on a "Farm to Market" road and about 1/4 mile southwest off the main road. This cemetery is located about 200 feet south of Bethel Church. The ground slopes to the north giving the cemetery a natural drainage. The new part of the cemetery is in good condition but the old part has grown up in grass that needs cutting. Half of the graves in the old part need refilling and many stones need resetting and recutting.

The Bethel Ridge Cemetery is located in Shaws Point Township. It was laid out about 1833 as that is the earliest date we can find on the tombstones in the old part of the cemetery. Part of this cemetery was known as the Old Walls Graveyard.

In 1873, a deed was made conveying the title to the land between the Old Walls Graveyard and the Bethel Ridge Church, to the County for burial purposes. The deed reads as follows:- This indenture made this 13th day of May, 1873 between John W. Giberson of the County of Macoupin and State of Illinois, party of the first part and the County of Macoupin for the benefit of Shaws Point Township for a burying ground of the second part, Witnesseth that the said party of the first part for and in consideration of the sum of $30.00 to him paid by the said party of the second part, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged has granted, bargained, sold, released and conveyed to the said party of the second part, assigns forever all that certain piece or parcel of land situate, lying and being in the County of Macoupin and State of Illinois and known, designated and described as follows, to wit:

Beginning 11 rods and 6 feet West of the NW. 1/4 of the NE. 1/4 of the NW. 1/4 of Section 23, T. 10 N. R 6, West of the Third Principal Meridian and from thence South 16 3/4 rods; thence West 12 2/3 rods and from thence North 16 3/4 rods and from thence East 12 2/3 rods and from thence north 16 3/4 rods and from thence East 12 2/3 rods to the place of beginning, containing 1 1/4 acres more or less.

The patrons of Bethel Church met and formed an association and elected the following gentlemen to serve as members of the Board of Trustees.

In 1874, an addition was made to the Bethel Cemetery. The deed to this land reads as follows:- This Indenture made this 5th day of June, 1874 between John W. Giberson party of the first part and John Davis, Benjamin F. Plain, William O. Trout, Robert A. Erwin and John W. Giberson, parties of the second part as trustees of the Bethel Cemetery Association, Witnesseth that the party of the first part for and in consideration of the sum of $45.00 to him paid by the said parties of the second part, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, has granted, bargained, sold, released and conveyed and by these presents does grant, bargain, sell release and convey to the said parties of the second part and their successors in office and assigns forever all that certain piece or parcel of land situate, lying and being in the County of Macoupin and State of Illinois and known, designated and described as follows, to wit:- (here is given another legal description of land, see Archives for more info.) ...commencing at the NE. corner of the old burying ground running South 20 rods. All of said land in Section 23, T. 10 N. R. 6, West of the Third Principal Meridian. In 1888, John W. Giberson transferred the title to a portion of the Old Walls Graveyard (which he acquired in a purchase of land in Section 23) to the town of Shaws Point. The deed reads as follows:-THE GRANTORS: John W. Giberson and Emma his wife of the town of Shaws Point in the County of Macoupin and State of Illinois for and in consideration of $1.00 CONVEY and QUIT CLAIM to the town of Shaws Point of the County of Macoupin and State of Illinois, all interest in the following described real-estate-
A piece of land once known as the Wall Graveyard, now known as the Bethel Cemetery located in the NE. 1/4 of the NW. 1/4 of Section 23, T.10 N. R. 6, West of the Third Principal Meridian. The deed was made for the purpose of conveying all interest in the above described piece of land to said town of Shaws Point for a burying ground forever situated in the County of Macoupin in the State of Illinois, hereby releasing and waiving all the rights under and by virtue of the Homestead Exemption Laws of this state.

After John W, Giberson QUIT CLAIM to his title to the old Walls Graveyard, another privately owned plot of this graveyard was deeded to the Bethel Cemetery. THE GRANTORS: Humphrey F. Valentine, Jennie Valentine his wife, Harvey L. Valentine, Clara B. Valentine his wife, Mary F. Ash, Jesse S. Ash her husband, Joseph R. Valentine and Jennie Valentine his wife in the County of Greene, State of Illinois for and in consideration of the sum of $1.00 in hand paid, CONVEY and WARRANT to the Township of Shaws Point of the County of Macoupin and of the State of Illinois the following described real-estate, to wit:- All their interest in and to one acre, more or less in the NE. 1/4 of the NW. 1/4 of Section 23, N. R. 6, West of the Third Principal Meridian, said piece of land was included in what was known as the Wall Graveyard and is now known as the Bethel Cemetery. This deed is made for the purpose of conveying the above described tract of land to said Bethel Cemetery for a burying ground forever reserving and accepting the ground occupied by the graves of George J. Valentine and Jane Valentine his wife, the parents of the above grantors, also the graves of Robert Stubblefield and Nancy Stubblefield his wife, situated in the County of Macoupin in the State of Illinois, hereby releasing and waving all rights under and by virtue of the Homestead Exemption laws of this state. On July 15, 1938 a meeting was called of the patrons of the Bethel Cemetery and Church for the purpose of forming a legal Cemetery Association. Those present were:

On August 1, 1938 a petition for incorporation duly signed by the trustees was presented to the Secretary of the State of Illinois, the Honorable Edward J. Hughes which reads as follows:

We the undersigned, Don H. Robeson, H. E. Easley, O. D. Crabtree, Frank Ring, Oliver Ballinger, Elbert Arter, J. H. Herschelmen and J. A. Cole, hereby present this our petition setting forth our desire to organize a cemetery association under an act of the General Assembly of the State of Illinois, entitled, "An Act to provide for the organization, ownership, management and control of cemetery associations" approved May 14, 1903 and all acts amendatory thereof, said cemetery to be located in Macoupin County, to be known by the name and styly (sp. as is) of BETHEL RIDGE CEMETERY ASSOCIATION. The Post-office address of the business office of said association is Rural Route, Carlinville, Illinois. (This petition is undersigned by the above named trustees, dated August 1, 1938 and was filed for record in the office of the Recorder of Deeds for Macoupin County, Illinois on August 2, 1938 in Volume 387, at page 515.)

A Charter was granted to the Bethel Ridge Cemetery Association by the Honorable Edward J. Hughes, Secretary of the State of Illinois, which reads:-
TO ALL TO WHOM THESE PRESENTS SHALL COME? GREETINGS:
Whereas a petition duly signed by Don H. Robeson, H. E. Easley, O. D. Crabtree, et al, having been filed in the office of the Secretary of State on the 1st day of August 1938 for the organization of the BETHEL RIDGE CEMETERY ASSOCIATION under and in accordance with the provisions of an act entitled "An Act to provide for the organization, ownership, management and control of cemetery associations" approved May 14, 1903 and all acts amendatory thereof, a copy of which petition is hereto attached.
I, Edward J. Hughes, Secretary of the State of Illinois by virtue of the powers and duties vested in me by law do hereby certify that the said Bethel Ridge Cemetery Association is a legally organized association in accordance with the provisions of the above named act.
IN TESTIMONY WHEREOF I hereto set my hand and cause to be affixed the great seal of the State of Illinois, done at the city of Springfield this 1st day of August, 1938 and of the Independence of the United States the one hundred and 63rd.

On August 22,1938 the Bethel Ridge Cemetery Association met at the basement of the Bethel Church. This meeting was called to order by the President.

The Charter was read to the members of O. D. Crabtree.

A motion was made by O. D. Crabtree and seconded by Don Robeson that Mrs. Ethel Ballinger and Mrs. Mable Easlay be appointed as assistants to the secretary. The Secretary and her assistants were then instructed to write to all patrons interested in the Bethel Ridge Cemetery.

Mr. Herschehnan and J. A. Cole were instructed to see and inquire more about the WPA project for the cemetery which is underway in the county

With the addition of the assistant secretaries, the present members of the board of the Bethel Ridge Cemetery reads as follows:

On October 3, 1938 a meeting was held of the patrons of the cemetery for the purpose of calling a "clean-up" of the cemetery.

On November 16, 1938 a meeting was called of the cemetery association in order to draw up a set of By-laws. They also had a discussion on trading some of the cemetery ground to Mr. F. Curlew for some ground on the west side of the cemetery to be used for cemetery lots. A bond for the treasurer was also discussed.

In December 1938, another addition was made to the Bethel Ridge Cemetery. THE GRANTORS:-B. F. Corlew and Effie Corlew his wife of the town of Zanesville, of the County of Montgomery and State of Illinois for and in consideration of $1.00 in hand paid, CONVEY and WARRANT to Don H. Roberson, J. H. Herschehnan, J. A. Cole, Oliver Ballinger, O. D. Crabtree, Frank Ring, H, E. Easley and Elbert Arter, trustees of the Bethel Ridge Cemetery and their successors in office of the town of Shaws Point, County of Macoupin, State of Illinois the following described real-estate, to-wit:
Beginning at the SW. corner of the Bethel Ridge Cemetery and running thence West 54 feet; thence North 474 feet; thence East 64 feet; thence South 474 feet to the place of beginning, situated in the County of Macoupin and State of Illinois, hereby releasing and waiving all rights under and by virtue of the Homestead Exemption Laws of this state.(This deed is dated December 30, 1938 and was filed for record in the office of the Recorder of Deeds for Macoupin County, Illinois on April 29, 1939 in Volume 384, Page 475.)

History of Bethel Ridge Cemetery

Daniel Giberson, the original owner of the land on which Bethel Ridge Cemetery is located was born at Giversonville (sp. as is), Ohio on May 4th, 1818. On June 5, 1840 he was united in marriage to Miss Isabelle Doyle. In 1846, Mr. Giberson, with his wife and four small children arrived at Alton, Illinois with only 25 cents in his pocket. He located near East Newburn in Jersey County where he lived until 1861. Together with his wife and family of 10 children he came to Shaws Point in Macoupin County and bought land. Here he farmed and lived until his death on September 8, 1887. He was a very quiet man. He helped his five sons to acquire land for their farms and home. Mr. and Mrs. Giberson are buried in Bethel Cemetery.

JOHN WESLEY GIBERSON, son of Daniel Giverson (sp. as is), donated the land now included in the Bethel Ridge Cemetery for cemetery purposes. He was born near Gibersonville, Ohio in 1842. He was yet a small child when his parents came to Illinois. He attended the country schools near Shaws point and began working on the farm with his father at an early age.

He was united in marriage to Miss Emma Padfield and three children were born to this union.

Mr. John W. Giberson and his family lived on the farm adjoining the cemetery. He served his township as Town Clerk in 1872 and again in 1875. He and his family were members of the Bethel Church.

John W. GGiberson died on February 17, 1902.

BETHEL CHURCH, from which derives the name of the cemetery is located on the north side of the cemetery. It is a small frame building. This small church is of the Methodist Episcopal Faith but no services have been held there for number of years. Two charter members of the Bethel Church are still living. They are Mr. F. M. Kirkland and his brother's wife  They lived within a mile of Bethel Ridge Cemetery for 74 years. Mr. Kirkland relates of attending the early schools in the county which were subscription schools. This school was a rude building made of logs and was situated in the south part of the Old Walls Graveyard which is now a part of the Bethel Ridge Cemetery. Later he went to school in Atwater and then to Blackburn College. He received his teacher's degree and taught school in Honey Point Township for two years. He also taught school at Union. In 1885, Mr. Kirkland was married to Miss Jennie Padfield.

There are many prominent and influential people of Shaws Point buried in the Bethel Ridge Cemetery, namely the Davis, Wagoner, Kirkland, Fuller, Giberson, Plain, Rusk, Cole, Burch, Groves and Martin families.

Tell Easly Ernst Shaw is a veteran of the World War. Died in 1919.

The oldest grave that we can find in the Bethel Ridge Cemetery is that of Rebecca Snow, wife of Henry Snow who died on October 20, 1833.

Tell Easly, Ernst Shaw is a veteran of the World War. Died in 1919.

Is Wm Padgett a veteran? There was a flag on his grave but may have been put there by mistake.

Mr. Brown,

So far as I can find out there isn't a Samuel Bates buried at Bethel. Wm Paget's name isn't on the list Mr. Easley has. There is a Joseph Paget buried at Rural and he is a Civil war veteran and his name is on the list. In regard to the Civil war Veterans I was talking to you about who has no Monument I have the Number of his discharge. Any time you need it call us.
