WPA VETERANS' CEMETERY PROJECT
The Macoupin County Archives has in its files, indexes/listings of many veterans buried in numerous Macoupin County cemeteries. WPA workers compiled the indexes during the Depression Era (about 1939-1940).
The cemeteries below were checked for veterans and I found there was also other information that a genealogist might fmd useful. I generally didn't copy the legal descriptions of the property if they were very long and drawn out. If you want that information, contact the Archives.

As in previous issues of the Macoupin County Searcher, I listed veterans' information from both typed sheets and work sheets. The work sheets are typed in bold and the typed sheets are typed in a normal font. In some cases the work sheet had additional or conflicting information from the typed sheets. The work sheets with soldier
information stated to check these sources: burial plot, cemetery record, death certificate or burial permit, patriotic organization (name), official U. S. records or other. These sources would probably be good sources to check still, today, as we have no way of knowing how thorough the WPA workers were. In these records, as always, I try to keep the grammar and spelling "as is" even if it appears incorrect.

Inquire to find if any veterans grave in cemetery has no marker. All veterans do not have markers.

The Brighton Cemetery was first started early in 1830 when a burial was made in that vicinity. About 30 years later the graveyard, where there were already some graves, was surveyed and layed out for burial purposes.

There is no record in the Macoupin County Records of Deeds, of a deed being made for the Brighton Cemetery prior to the "Additions"; although plats of surveys were made and recorded.

In 1863, a plat was made of the Brighton Cemetery, and is the earliest date on record. The certification of the plat reads as follows:

I certify that the accompanying plat is a true plat of a graveyard as surveyed by me for Michael Brown, situated on the SW. corner of the NE. 1/4 of Section 19, T. 7 N. R. 9 West of the Third Principal Meridian on the 21st day of April 1863. Said graveyard to be known as the Brighton Cemetery.

In 1866, an additional tract of land was surveyed for burial purposes apq was deeded to the Brighton Cemetery Association. The certification of survey reads as follows:

T certify that the accompanying plat of an addition to the graveyard as surveyed by me for Marion Gilson, Elizabeth J. Gilson and Lemuel P. Stratton, execoutors of James W. Gilson, is correct it being situated in the SE. corner of the NW 1/4 of Section 19 T. 7 N. R. 9 West of the Third Principal Meridian. Said survey being made on the 10th day of April 1866, said plat being known as the Western Addition" to the Brighton Cemetery.

The foregoing certification of a survey and map of the plat of the Brighton Cemetery "Western Addition" is dated April 10, 1866 and was filed for record in the office of the Recorder of Deeds for Macoupin County, Illinois on April 17, 1866 in Land Plat Book "A" (Green Book) at page 77.)

In 1881, a legal association was formed by the Brighton Cemetery Association and the following petition for incorporation was sent to the Secretary of State, the Honorable Henry D. Dement.

-------We, the undersigned: R. H. Crandall, G. W. Hillard, L. F. Stratton, E. T. Dain, Edwin Amass and W. E. Merrill, citizens of the United States, propose to form a corporation under an act of the General assembly of the State of Illinois, entitled, "An Act Concerning Corporations," approved April 18, 1872---------------

(This petition is dated July 15, 1881 and was filed for record in the office of the Recorder of Deeds for Macoupin County, Illinois on September 8, 1881 in Book CY, Page 600.)

A charter was granted to the association by the Secretary of State and reads as follows: ----------------

On September 1, 1881, the first fence was put around the Brighton Cemetery. It was a barbed wire fence of good quality.

Shortly after the organization of the Brighton Cemetery Association additions of land for burial purposes were granted to the Cemetery Association.

On September 2, 1881, a quit claim deed was made conveying the title of the Western Addition to the Brighton Cemetery Association. This deed reads as follows: THE GRANTORS: M. Francis Brown and M. Spencer Brown, her husband, E. P. Gilson, George H. Gilson and Mary A. Gilson, his wife, for the consideration of $1.00
CONVEY and QUIT CLAIM to the Brighton Cemetery Association all their interest in the following described real estate, to-wit: ------------------. (This deed, signed by the above named grantors is dated September 2, 1881 and was filed for record in the office of the Recorder of Deeds for Macoupin County in Illinois on September 8, 1881 in
Book DF, Page 104.)

Another addition was made to the Brighton Cemetery when the heirs of Michael Brown deeded a portion of land to the cemetery. The deed reads as follows: THIS INDENTURE: witnesseth that the grantors, M. Spencer Brown and M. Frances Brown, his wife of the town of Brighton, in the County of Macoupin and State of Illinois forand in consideration of the sum of $1.00, in hand paid, CONVEYS and QUIT CLAIM to the Brighton Cemetery association, of the town of Brighton, County of Macoupin and of the State of Illinois, the following described real estate, to-wit: ----------------------- (This deed, signed by the above named grantors, is dated September 2, 1881 and was filed for record in the office of the Recorder of Deeds for Macoupin County, Illinois on September 8, 1881 in Book CW, Page 334.)

On the same day that the two preceding deeds were made, a third addition was made to the BrightonCemetery. The deed for this transaction reads as follows: THIS INDENTURE: witnesseth that the grantors, M. Francis Brown and M. Spencer Brown, ber husband, E. P. Gilson, George H. Gilson and Mary, his wife, oftbe
County of Macoupin and State of Illinois, for and in consideration of the sum of $750.00 in hand paid, CONVEY and WARRANT to the Brighton Cemetery Association of Brighton, of Macoupin County, State of Illinois the following described real-estate, to-wit: --------------------------. Also to erect a lawful fence from the SE. corner of Lot #47; thence South 5 chains and 30 links; thence East 40 feet. Also to plat and record as a public highway, to wit:
Commencing at the South end of Cross Street and continuing the same 5 chains and 30 links South; situated in the County ofMacoupin, in the State of illinois, hereby releasing and waiving all rights under and by virtue of the Homestead Exemption Laws of the State. (This deed is dated September 2, 1881 and was filed for record in the
office of the Recorder of Deeds for Macoupin County, Illinois on September 8, 1881 in Book CW, at page 336.)

In November, 1881, Michael Brown, Quit Claim to land for a right-of-way and all his interest in the  Brighton Cemetery. The deed conveying titles reads as follows: THE GRANTORS: Michael Brown and Margaret, his wife, of the town of Brighton, County of Macoupin and State ofIllinois for and in consideration oftbe sum of
$1.00 QUIT CLAIM to the Brighton Cemetery Association all interest in the following described real-estate, to-wit:

The right-of-way 24 feet wide commencing at or near the SE. corner of land now owned and occupied by Henry Boulter and running on the Best ground to intersect a carriage-way now running into said Brighton Cemetery and also the right-of-way to connect said carriage-way with the carriage-way 16 feet wide on the East side of said
cemetery together with my interest in said cemetery as platted and recorded. Except lots numbered 8 and 9 of Block #1 and lots numbered 1 and 2 of Block #2. (This deed is dated November 1, 1881 and is in the hands of the cemetery association and has not been recorded. This deed was copied from their records.)

Shortly after the association was formed, the Brighton Cemetery was swept by a large fire, which destroyed all the trees and bushes that had been so newly and well landscaped. Sparks from a train of the C. B. & O. Railroad which runs through the East corner of the cemetery, was to blame for the fire. A damage suit was filed against the railroad, the results of which have not been disclosed. Much time and labor was spent in replacing trees, shrubs and flower beds.

In 1883, the "New Addition" to the Brighton Cemetery was surveyed and laid out in lots. The certification of the survey reads as follows:

I hereby certify that the plat accurately represents a "New Addition" to the Brighton Cemetery as surveyed and platted by me. Sizes of lots, width of streets, avenues and alleys are shown on the plat in feet and inches.
Blocks shown by letters, lots in blocks in progressive numbers, a piece of 3 inch sewer pipe two feet long is firmly set vertically in the ground so that the top shall be even with the surface, at numerous corners notable at each of the 4 following comers, to wit: --------------------.

The Southern Addition to the Brighton Cemetery was surveyed by the Morse Warren Engineering Company in 1910 and the survey reads as follows: --------------------------.

In July, 1910, the "Southern Addition" was added to the Brighton Cemetery. The deed conveying the title to the land reads as follows: THE GRANTORS: Mary Frances Brown and M. Spencer Brown, her husband, of the village of Brighton in the County of Macoupin and State of Illinois for and in consideration of the sum of $459.00 in
hand paid, CONVEY and WARRANT to the Brighton Cemetery Association, a corporation organized under the laws of the State of Illinois, of the village of Brighton, County of Macoupin and State of Illinois the following described real-estate, to-wit: -------------------------------.(This deed is dated July 16, 1910 and was filed for record in the office of the Recorder of Deeds for Macoupin County, Illinois in Volume 249 of Miscellaneous Records at page 128 on July 20, 1910.)

In 1921, the heirs of M. Spencer Brown made an addition to the Brighton Cemetery, the description of which reads as follows: THE GRANTORS: Mary Frances Brown, a widow, Leila B. Fritchie, a widow, Spencer Gilson Brown, deceased, late of the village of Brighton in the County of Macoupin and State of Illinois, for and in consideration of $1.00 in hand paid, CONVEYS and WARRANTS to the Brighton Cemetery Association of the village of Brighton, County of Macoupin, State of Illinois the following described real-estate, to-wit: _
As part consideration herein it is expressly made a covenant of this deed that the grantee covenants and agrees to erect and maintain the fence along the entire length of the West side of the tract herein conveyed. (This deed is dated April 26, 1921 and was recorded in the office of the Recorder of Deeds for Macoupin County, Illinois on April 30, 1921 in Volume 310 of Miscellaneous Records at page 329.)

In 1924, the heirs of M. Spencer Brown made another addition to the Brighton Cemetery and this addition is known as the "Oakland Addition". The deed for the purchase of this land reads as follows: THE GRANTORS:
Mary Frances Brown a widow, leila B. Fritchie, a widow, of the village of Brighton, County of Macoupin and State of Illinois and Spencer Gilson Brown and Nellie M. Brown, his wife, of the city of Alton, County of Madison and State of Illinois, for and in consideration of the sum of $459.00 in hand paid, CONVEY and WARRANT to the Brighton Cemetery Association, of the village of Brighton, County of Macoupin and State of Illinois the following described real-estate, to-wit: -----------------------. The grantors herein are all the heirs at law of M. Spencer Brown, deceased who with Mary Frances Brown, his wife, held the record title to the land herein conveyed. (This deed is dated February 19, 1924 and was recorded in the office of the Recorder of Deeds for Macoupin County, illinois on October 18, 1937 in Volume 383 of Miscellaneous Records, at page 62.)

In 1937, the "Oakland Addition" was surveyed and laid out in lots and walkways. The certification of the survey reads as follows: --------------------. (The map and certification of survey of the Oakland Addition to Brighton Cemetery is dated November 1937 and was recorded in the office of the Recorder of Deeds for Macoupin County, Illinois on January 10, 1938 in Plat Book "E" of Land Platts at page 45.)

In 1938, an addition was made to the Brighton Cemetery. This latest addition is the seventh addition to be made to the Brighton Cemetery. The deed transferring the title to the land reads as follows: THE GRANTORS: Leila B. Fritchie, a widow, of the village of Brighton, County of Macoupin and Spencer Gilson Brown and Nellie
M. Brown, his wife, of the city of Alton, County of Madison and State of Illinois for and in consideration of the sum of $1.00 in hand paid, CONVEY and WARRANT to the Brighton Cemetery Association of the village of Brighton,
County of Macoupin, State of Illinois the following described real-estate to-wit: ------------------------------. It is expressly agreed by and between the parties hereto that the Brighton Cemetery Association shall forever maintain all fences surrounding the real estate herein. (This deed is dated April 22, 1938 and was recorded in the office of the Recorder of Deeds for Macoupin County, Illinois on April 25, 1938 in Volume 383 of Miscellaneous Records at page 240.)

The present trustees and members of the board of the Brighton Cemetery Association are as follows.

Victor W. Schroeder, President; Emil C. Franz, Vice-President; Fred Simmons - Secretary; Harold G. Bott- Treasurer; E. T. Knehnel - Trustee; E. A. Wells - Trustee; Rollie G. lee - Trustee.

The Brighton Cemetery Association have a trust fund with sufficient funds to pay a sexton the year round to care for the cemetery. 110 lots in this cemetery have perpetual care and about the same number are paid for by individuals. The old part of the cemetery is not cared for by the sexton and is in need of attention. lots in this
cemetery can be bought with or without perpetual care.

History

Michael Brown was one of the first settlers of Brighton Township. He was born in Champaign County, Ohio in 1810. When he was seven years old, the family moved to Alton, Illinois. There he attended his first school.
It was a little log building which stood about 1/2 mile from his father's house. The rough floor was made of split timber; the door of clap boards and a log which was conveniently left out along the side of the building answered the purpose of a window. There was no fire-place, as the school was only kept during the summer months and then only at irregular intervals.

In May, 1828, just before his eighteenth birthday, Mr. Brown started for the land mines at Galena. He formed a partnership with Enoch Long and they bought an interest in the Mineral Point Mining Company and built the first shanty ever erected at Mineral Point. This interprise proved successful although the low cost of land
prevented large profits. On Christmas Day, 1829 Mr. Brown reached Alton and spent two months at school. In 1830, Mr. Brown came to Macoupin County and settled in Brighton. There in partnership witb his brother, James Brown, he entered 80 acres of land in the East 1/4 of the NW. 1/4 of Section 19. This entry was made in his brother's name. This land was partly timber and partly a prairie.

In 1836, Michael Brown married Miss Sarah B. Peter. There were seven children born to this union. Mrs. Brown died in 1851. In 1853, his second marriage took place, at which time he married Mrs. Margaret A. Summer, and two children born to them.

Mr. Brown began his life without any capital except his good health, industrious habits and determination to succeed in the world. He put the land of which he was owner, under cultivation as rapidly as possible and his activity, energy and ability to undergo exposure and perform a great deal of work have been the chief instrument of his success in life. He became the owner of 550 acres of land, part of which was in McLean and Madison Counties.

It may be said of Mr. Brown, that an ambition to accumulate money was never a trait of his character. He desired a comfortable amount with which to keep himself and his family comfortable but he did not wish to become rich for the mere sake of money. He had natural ability and business intelligence and devoted his energies to that
purpose. He might have become one of the wealthiest men of the community. His expenditures had been liberal in all directions. He raised a large family of children and provided for them liberally, having divided among them about $7000.00. He was one of the founders and contributed to the erection of the Brighton Methodist Church of
which he was the first Class Leader. He had contributed to the building of all the churches in Brighton with the exception of the Baptist Church which was being erected at the time when all his money was taken up in erecting the Methodist Church. He donated money for the erection of the Catholic Church. He believed there were good people among the Catholics as well as others and that they should have a house of worship. He was always an earnest supporter of free schools and all educational enterprises. Even before he was married, he assisted to carry on the subscription schools of the neighborhood. The proposition of building a school-house at Brighton was at first defeated at four successive elections, when finally the friends of a school determined to accomplish their objects by private subscriptions. A joint stock company was formed to which Mr. Brown subscribed three different times and the much needed building was erected. By a change in law, however which authorized school directors to purchase property, the building was finally sold to the school district. Mr. Brown contributed to public enterprises, such as the Rockford and Rock Island Railroad to which he subscribed $1500.00 and also the Park Hotel Company. During the Civil War, he contributed $350.00 annually to the Sanitary Commission and other objects growing out of the war.

Of his personal traits of character one can speak with fullest freedom, knowing well that no man stands higher in the community, nor was anyone more deserving of commendation, whose influence and energy had been thrown on the side of religion, morality and virtue. He had given his means and his influence to the betterment of
the community and it can be said that Macoupin County possessed few citizens whose lives have been more creditable to themselves or more useful to their fellowmen. For four years he held the office of Justice of peace and was the second Treasurer of Brighton Township, which office he held for twenty-seven consecutive years. He was a
captain of a Militia Company during the war and a member of the Union League. In politics he was a Whig and upon the disruption of that party he became a Republican. Later he took an independent and conservative stand in politics.

The Brighton Cemetery is a very neat cemetery. There are only a few of the lots that are not taken care of.
The driveways are in good condition and are surfaced with shale. In the center of the cemetery is a large circle where the Memorial Day services are held each year. In the center of the circle is a large flower bed. Every year the Legion grows poppies and tulips in the flower bed for Decoration Day. The cemetery ground slopes to the south and east giving it a good drain. A good wire fence encloses this burial grounds with a large iron gate on the southwest corner of the cemetery. On either side of the gate are two large brick posts with an arch. The citizens of Brighton donated the gate to the cemetery association and the names of the donors are engraved on metal plates on the two posts at the gateway. Their names are as follows:

One of the outstanding monuments in the Brighton Cemetery which is rarely seen is entirely of metal.
There are two metal plates on the monument which bear the following inscription.

The graves of H. b. Farris, Chris L. Lehr, Adolph Schneeberg and Darwin Wales do not have any markers.

The oldest grave that we can locate in the Brighton Cemetery is that of Johnathon Brown who died on July 1, 1836.
