To reach the Bullman Cemetery one travels 3 miles East on Route 38 out of Carlinville and then 1/2 mile South to the Bullman farm. There one gains permission to cross the pasture to the cemetery. The cemetery is about 1/8 mile from the road.

The Bullman Cemetery is a small private cemetery which was laid out in the early years of 1840 for the final resting place of Mr. Bullman. A short time after Mr. Bullman's death Mrs. Bullman and her family were sitting peacefully in their home and a man came to their home. He was very sick and feverish. Mrs. Bullman nursed him and fed him before he went away. A few days later three of the Bullman children became very sick with fever and it was discovered that they had contracted Scarlet Fever from the stranger. The three children died and were buried in the pasture on the Bullman farm next to their father.

We have carefully searched the land records of Macoupin County for a deed to the Bullman Cemetery but none has been found. The land on which the cemetery is located is still in the Bullman Estate and no exception can be found.

The only means we have of giving the description and location of this small cemetery is that made by the fieldmen of the cemetery (as fenced in) which could read as follows:

A small plot of ground (1/48 of an acre) out of the 50 acre tract out of the W. 1/2 of the N. 1/2 of the SW. 1/4 of Section 27, T. 8. N. R. 8, West of the Third Principal Meridian, and measures: Commencing at the SE. corner of the Bullman Cemetery, running thence North 60 feet, thence West 15 feet, thence South 60 feet, thence 15 feet to the place of beginning situated in the county of Mac. & state of Ill.

There are no trustees to the Bullman Cemetery. It is still in the Bullman Estate and the heirs take care of it. No trustees were ever appointed.

The Bullman Cemetery is in fair condition. There are only 12 graves in this cemetery and they are in good condition. 4 of the tombstones are down and need resetting. About 7 of the stones need recutting as the inscriptions are weather-worn and cannot be read. The grass is tall and needs cutting. This burial grounds sets on a hillside and has good drainage. A woven-wire fence encloses this small cemetery. This fence is in poor condition.

The oldest grave in the Bullman Cemetery is that of "John Bullman" who died in 1845.

History

There is a historical road leading past the Bullman Cemetery. This road was used by the early state coaches and was called the Stage Coach Trail, between St. Louis and Springfield. As we are told by an old lady, Abraham Lincoln stopped at the Bullman farm as he was passing through and put flowers on the graves of their children.
