The Dehne Cemetery is a small cemetery located southeast of Brighton on the Frank Smith land. This cemetery was included in a 5 acre tract of land which was donated by Mr. Ingersoll to the School Trustees of the District to be used for school, church and burial grounds. Today the cemetery covers 1 acre of land but the church and school are ..... the cemetery derives its name from the Dehne family who ......

In 1862, Mr. Ingersoll made a deed conveying the title to the land over to the trustees of the School District which reads as follows: KNOW ALL MEN BY THESE PRESENTS; that I, George B. Ingersoll of the county of Macoupin and State of Illinois for and in consideration of the sum of $1.00 to me paid, the receipt thereof I do hereby acknowledge have given, granted, aliened, released and confirmed and by these presents do give, grant, alien, release and confirm unto W. O. Merrill, J. S. Blackwell and William Jones, trustees of Schools in Township 7 North of Range 9, West, in Macoupin County, State of Illinois and their successors in office for the use of District #5 of said Township for school, church and burial purposes the following described parcel of land, to-wit:

5 acres running North and South off the E. part of the N. 1/2 of the NE 1/4 of the NE. % of Section 31, T. 7 N. R. 9, West in Macoupin County. TO HAVE AND TO HOLD the aforegranted premises for the purposes above specified, forever. And I, hereby declare that said premises are free from all incumbrance except that a road runs through the same which must be permitted to remain if the District desires it; that I have good right to convey the same and that I will WARRANT and DEFEND the same forever against the lawful claims and demands of all persons.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I, the said George B. Ingersoll have hereunto set my hand and seal this 1st day of September in the year of our Lord, 1862. (This deed is dated September 1, 1862 and was recorded in the office of the Recorder of Deeds for Macoupin County, Illinois in Book YY of Deed records at page 503 on November 5, 1862.)

The only description that we can give of the Dehne Cemetery is that made by the fieldmen of the cemetery as fenced in and could read as follows: An acre of land out of the N. l/2 of the NE. 1/4 of the NE. 1/4 of Section 31, T. 7 N. R. 9,_West of the Third Principal Meridian and measures as follows; Commencing at the corner of the Dehne Cemetery and running thence   feet; thence    feet; thence     feet; thence     feet to the place of beginning, situated in the County of Macoupin and State of Illinois.

There is no sexton for the Dehne Cemetery. A man is hired to keep the grass cut for which he is paid $5.00 per year, which amount is donated by the relatives and friends of the deceased buried there.

It is doubtful whether the Dehne Cemetery will be used any more, except for an old lady whose husband is buried there and who wishes to be buried in the same lot.

The Dehne Cemetery is a neat little cemetery and is well kept. 25 graves have been counted in the cemetery and of that number 6 need filling in. 8 tombstones are leaning which need resetting and the inscriptions on 8 of the tombstones are weatherworn and need recutting. There is no driveway in or to the cemetery. The cemetery sets on a hill giving it good drainage. The - - - fence which encloses this burial grounds is in fair condition.

To reach the Dehne Cemetery one travels       of the-Brighton on a     road. The cemetery sets on a hill along the side of the Brighton public road. It can be reached at all tunes.

There is one veteran buried in the Dehne Cemetery.
