(Written January 24, 1940) Thomas Jefferson McReynolds and his wife Sarah Jane Dixon owned a
great many slaves when they lived in Virginia and also Kentucky; but
sold their slaves before they came to Illinois. They came here with
a great deal of money and bought a lot of the land in the community
around this cemetery for $1.25 per acre. This is a public cemetery, but
mostly the McReynolds relatives were buried in the cemetery.
About 15 years ago, when Mayfield Memorial was just starting, there
were 7 bodies, all McReynolds, were dug up and moved to Mayfield
Memorial cemetery. Among them was a civil war soldier, James
McReynolds, son of Thomas McReynolds. He has a government marker at his
grave at present time. Pierce McReynolds is the present owner of the
land where the cemetery is located. He is a grandson of Thomas
McReynolds. Thomas McReynolds deeded the cemetery to the public many
years ago. Don’t know the dates. Don’t know for sure he did. He talked
of doing that.
There are 3 infant graves left in the cemetery, one with a small
marker; but there will be more of the McReynolds buried there. John
McReynolds got a deed from D. McReynolds. These transactions among the
relatives were
made in 1889 or ’90.
