Mt Pleasant or Piasa Cemetery

Shipman Township Section 29 Macoupin County
Located in Piasa Illinois on Route 16
Indexed by WPA ca. 1939-1940

The Macoupin County Archives has in its files, indexes/listings of many veterans buried in numerous Macoupin County cemeteries.  WPA workers compiled the indexes during the Depression Era.  Mt. Pleasant Cemetery listing is found in Box 2 at the Macoupin County Archives.

The following list of veterans is made up of two sources.  One is the individual work sheet that information was copied onto for each veteran.  The instructions stated to check these sources:  burial plot, cemetery record, death certificate or burial permit, patriotic organization (name), official U. S. records or other.  These names were copied into a typed list.  I took the information from both sources because the typed list often didn’t give all the information that was on the work sheet.  On some of these WPA records the two sources had some discrepancies between the original work sheet and the typed sheet.  If you find information on the following pages for your ancestor please research all differences because it’s impossible to know which source is correct.  This information will at least give you an idea of where to begin.

In 1939 the following was said about the cemetery:

The Mt. Pleasant Cemetery is located at the edge of the city of Piasa on Route 110.  This cemetery is laid out very nice, but there are plenty high weeds as the cemetery is not taken care of as it should be.
There is a driveway leading to the cemetery which could stand a good repairing.
The fence is a good wire fence and is in fair condition.
The cemetery contains 1 ¼ acres, also a road from the Alton road 25 feet wide to the said land on the section line.  This includes the church also (Methodist Episcopal).

The cemetery began in the year 1851, the land was donated to the church trustees by Mr. Samuel Treble for cemetery and church purposes.  Recorded March 5, 1851.  The deed to the cemetery and church can be found in Book U. page 378, 5th day of Oct. 1851.”

The trustees of the cemetery at the time that the cemetery began were as follows:

Harmon Justison --- Treasurer
David C. Kellem  --- Secretary
H. M. Ford
J. R. Denny
Richard Kellam
A. W. Amas
Milton Yeatman
Richard James

As part of the agreement on the deed it mentioned that:  The trustees shall erect and build a place of worship for the use of the members of the Methodist Episcopal Church in the United States of America, according to the rules and discipline which from time to time may be agreed upon and adopted by the ministers and preachers of the said church at their General Conferences in the United States of America.  (For more information concerning this agreement you will find a copy of the deed and land description in the folder “Mt. Pleasant Cemetery”, Box 2, on a  shelf at Macoupin County Archives.
