VETERANS BURIED AT SHIPMAN CITY CEMETERY
SHIPMAN, IL
WORKS PROGRESS ADMINISTRATION CEMETERY PROJECT
INDEXED ca. 1939 - 1940
The Macoupin County Archives has, in its files, indexes/listings of many veterans buried in numerous Macoupin County cemeteries. WPA workers compiled the indexes during the Depression Era. The Shipman City Cemetery listing is found in Box 2 at the Macoupin County Archives.
Beginning at a stone 4 chains and 34 links north of North East – corner of lot No. (11) eleven Baily Schultz addition on the north of Shipman Thence West – parallel with the north line of said addition 26 rods to a stone, \\
thence North on a line with the east line of Virginia street of B Schultz’s addition on the west of Shipman (21) rds to a stone, thence East (26) rds to a stone on the hedge, thence south along the hedge (12) rds to the point of Beginning, containing 3 ¼ acres.

This cemetery is taken care of by Town Board who consist of:
Arthur Huckelbridge, Fremont Reader, Leon Gaspard, Wilbur Kahl, Lester Kelsey
There is no trust, just a cemetery fund which is got from the sale of lots. They intend to establish a trust fund in the near future.
There is no care taker of this cemetery. Each lot owner takes care of his own lot, except the lots of veterans which are cared for by the American Legion. There is no charter.
Mrs. Maud Griffin is grantor to new part (several years ago). Baily Schultz was grantor to the old part in the fall of ‘69 they put fence around cemetery sold to village (as is).
A little town north of what is now Shipman was first town it was known as Brooklyn.
Mr. Baily Shultz was an uncle to Herman Schultz one of the persons interviewed.
Interviewed Mr. Lester Kelsey – Banker; Mr. Herman Schultz; Mrs. Carl Schultz, City Clerk and Jim Archer, janitor at grade school. Jim Archer helped locate veterans’ graves.
The cemetery is in fair condition, has a few weeds in it. Has a nice large grove of evergreen trees. Has some nice large monuments. There is a hedge fence on the west side of cemetery - on north there is a woven wire fence – on east side there is no fence but there is a road & a side walk running north & south and a slight slope on west side.
The new part of the cemetery lies directly east of the present cemetery, with the city roadway that runs N. & S. The new part has never been platted nor fenced. They will be interested in having the W.P.A. to take care of it, we were informed by Lester Kelsey.

The following list of veterans is made up of two sources. One is the individual work sheet that information was copied onto for each veteran. The instructions stated to check these sources: burial plot, cemetery record, death certificate or burial permit, patriotic organization (name) official U. S. records or other. These names were copied into a typed list. I took information from both sources because the typed list didn't give all of the information that was on the work sheet. Also, there were numerous discrepancies between the original work sheet and the typed sheet. I am listing information from both sources. If you find information below on your ancestor's record please research all differences because it's impossible to know which source is correct. The information will at least give you an idea of where to begin.
Typed Sheet is listed first – Work sheet is listed second (in bold):
