Staunton City Cemetery
Section 30 T7N R6W
Staunton Township Macoupin County
Indexed by WPA ca. 1939-1940
The Macoupin County Archives has, in its files, indexes/listings of
many veterans buried in numerous Macoupin County cemeteries. WPA
workers compiled the indexes during the Depression Era. Staunton
City Cemetery listing is found in Box 2 at the Macoupin County Archives.
The following list of veterans is made up of two sources. One is
the individual work sheet that information was copied onto for each
veteran. The instructions stated to check these sources:
burial plot, cemetery record, death certificate or burial permit,
patriotic organization (name) official U. S. records or other.
These names were copied into a typed list. I took information
from both sources because the typed list didn't give all of the
information that was on the work sheet. Also, there were some
discrepancies between the original work sheet and the typed
sheet. I am listing information from both sources. If you
find information below on your ancestor's record please research all
differences because it's impossible to know which source is
correct. The information will at least give you an idea of where
to begin.
To reach the Staunton City Cemetery one travels straight west of the
city down Pearl Street about 1/2 mile.
There are 83 soldiers buried in the Staunton City Cemetery. Ten
do not have markers. The ones with (*) have gov't. markers.
The names are listed in the order that they were on the original typed
sheet. The information on the work sheet is listed in the order
that it was listed on the work sheet, with the exception of the name
that was listed first name first.
Typed Sheet is listed first - Work Sheet is listed second (in
bold):

MCGS Editor's Note: There is an Archibald
Burns marker at Spangle Cemetery in the country between Staunton and
Livingston (Madison County), IL. This person has the same
birth date and was a Capt. in Co. D 10 Ill. Inf. His regiment is
different in the service record of the record sheet, but not on the
typed sheet. Otherwise info appears similar. Perhaps his
body was moved or the family changed their minds as where to bury him.

STAUNTON CITY CEMETERY
STAUNTON TOWNSHIP 30-7-6
MACOUPIN COUNTY, ILLINOIS
½ MILES WEST OF MAIN STREET IN STAUNTON
(Recorded about 1940)
The Staunton City Cemetery originated about 100 years ago but we were
unable to find out who first laid out the burial grounds. About
40 years after the first burial was made in this cemetery the land was
purchased and the cemetery platted. Additional land was purchased
whenever necessary until today it consists of 13 acres of land.
this cemetery is under the direction of the City Council of Staunton.
In 1880, about 1 ½ acres of land (on which there were already a number
of graves) was bought from Mr. Miller and used for burial
purposes. The deed conveying the title to the land over to the
trustees reads as follows: THE GRANTORS: Henry Miller and Louise
Miller, his wife, of Staunton in the County of Macoupin and State of
Illinois for and in consideration of $30.00 in hand paid, CONVEY and
WARRANT to John Snell, Stephen Sawyer and Edmund Fritz, trustees of the
cemetery near Staunton and to their successors in office of the County
of Macoupin and State of Illinois the following described real-estate,
to-wit: a long property description follows….
(this deed is dated May 15, 1880 and was recorded in the office of the
Recorder of Deeds for Macoupin County, Illinois on May 18, 1880 in Book
“CX” of Deed Records at page 384.)
In 1881, the cemetery was deeded to the Village of Staunton and the
trans was acknowledged by William Patrick, George W. Townsend, Henry
Hackman, Henry Voge, Frederick R. Fritz and Rudolph Knoemoller
composing the Board of Village Trustees of the Village of Staunton, in
the County of Macoupin and State of Illinois. (To read the
transfer in its entirety, you will find a complete copy with this index
at the Staunton Public Library, Genealogy Room.)
In 1891, ordinances were drawn up and accepted after which a Board of
Managers, selected from the City Council, were appointed to have
control and management of the cemetery.
In 1907, the third addition was made to the Staunton City Cemetery and
it is known as Section 3 and is located to the far west. The deed
conveying the title to the land over the trustees reads as
follows: THE GRANTORS: Henry Miller and Louisa Miller, his wife,
of the city of Staunton, in the County of Macoupin and State of
Illinois for and in consideration of the sum of $279.20 in hand paid,
CONVEY and WARRANT to the City of Staunton, in the County of Macoupin,
State of Illinois the following described real-estate , to-wit:
(a long legal land description follows).
In 1922, the cemetery board deemed it necessary to make another
addition to the cemetery and Section 4 was purchased together with a 16
foot strip to the east of the original cemetery for a driveway.
Section 4 is to the North the full length of the cemetery. The deed
transferring the land over to the trustees reads as follows: THE
GRANTORS: Henry Miller, a single man, Louis Miller, Clara M.
Miller, Otto H. C. Miller, Lucia M. Miller, Wm. Miller, Christine
Miller, Albert C. Miller, Mable J. Miller of the City of Staunton,
Illinois, County of Macoupin, State of Illinois the follow described
real-estate, to-wit: (long legal land description follows.)
The present Board of Managers of the Staunton City Cemetery are:
Joe Mouish, Chairman; Roy France – Trustee; Fred Bemath-Trustee; Otto
Mull – Trustee; E. J. Foulk, Sexton.
The money from the sale of lots is put into thee city treasury.
Whenever any debt is incurred for the repair of the cemetery grounds or
any other expense, a levy is made out of the taxes to cover the amount.
The Staunton City Cemetery is in fair condition. 3244 graves have
been counted in the cemetery and 570 of that number needs filling in or
leveling. 278 tombstones are leaning or down and need
resetting. 94 markers are old and weatherworn and the
inscriptions need recutting. The driveways throughout the
cemetery is covered with shale. The woven wire fence which
encloses this burial ground is in fair condition. There are 12
soldiers buried in this cemetery who do not have any marker. The
land is hilly and gives the cemetery good drainage.
THE CITY OF STAUNTON
In connection with the history of the City Cemetery we touch upon the
pioneer history of the City and Township of Staunton and some of the
early pioneers who are buried in the cemetery.
In the year 1817, John Wood a blacksmith and millwright came from
Virginia and settled on the southeast part of Section 36 and he was
beyond a doubt the first settler in Staunton Township. Later came
Richard Wilhelm, Eennith Seymore who settled on Section 24, then came
Talamachus Camp, Jesse Chapman, James B. Cowell, Lewis Cormack, William
Cormack, Rodger Snell and many others who emigrated from North and
South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky and a few from
Pennsylvania.
Life of these early pioneers was rough and hard. They generally
settled at the edge of a timber where they could easily cut trees to
secure logs for their cabins and could also be protected against the
wind and the storm. The land near the timber was soft and more
easily cultivated with their primitive implements. Their homes
were rude huts with a small window and door for light and a rough floor
made from split logs; but some of the pioneers did not even have a
floor. The nearest market was St. Louis and Alton and the
pioneers had to live entirely upon the products of the farm and the
wild game which was so abundant. The women of the family had to
raise, ret, and spin the flax from which the cloth was woven and
likewise cut and make the clothing.
The early schools were of the most primitive character. They were
constructed of unhewn logs, which were sometimes covered with boards,
which were held in their place by weight poles and no floor.
Oiled paper was placed over an opening in the wall to serve as
windows. The seats were usually made of split logs with wooden
pins driven into them for logs. Sometimes these logs were hewen
and smoothed for comfort and to save the wear of the clothing.
The subjects taught in the early were orthography, reading, writing and
some arithmetic. Most of these schools were by perscription
whereby the teacher received $2.00 per student for the school
year. The first school taught in Staunton Township was in 1822 by
William Wilcox and was a private school taught 8 hours day and 5 days a
week for 3 months at $2.00 per scholar. The first school-house
erected in 1825 was built of hickory logs split open and put up in
cabin style with a clapboard roof and dirt floor. This building
was erected and completed on Saturday and school began the following
Monday and was also used as a church and public hall. Rodger
Snell, Tristian P. Hoxsey, Philip Denham and Archibald Hoxsey were the
first teachers in the township.
The first entries of land in the township was that made by Talamachus
Camp in 1819 on Section 19, which is now part of Mt. Olive Township,
and in 1825 he entered land on Section 31. In 1828 Nathaniel
Buckmaster entered land in Section 29 and Rodger Snell in Section 31.
The first church was built and dedicated in 1828 and stood on the
grounds now used as a cemetery in the town of Staunton. This
church was a small cabin built of logs much on the order of the school
house and had rough pews and a pulpit and was used by all
denominations, each reserving their particular Sunday to hold their
services. As the city of Staunton grew each denomination built
their own edifice and there were 9 churches in Staunton serving the
Presbyterian, English, German, Methodist, Lutheran, Evangelical
Lutheran, Christian, Baptist and Catholic faiths.
The first minister who preached in the township was Parham Randle of
the Methodist denomination at the home of Richard Chapman in
1820. James Lemon, a Baptist, preached in the fall of 1821 at the
residence of Talamachus Camp.
The first marriage of parties living in the township was that of Jesse
Chapman and Comfort Alexander on May 29, 1820.
The first white child born in the township was Benjamin Chapman, son of
John D. and Sarah Chapman in the spring of 1820.
Dr. Luke S. Coons was the first physician who came in 1835.
The first mill was made by Richard Chapman who purchased a pair of
small millstones and fitted up a hand mill where up to 1823 most of the
breadstuffs for the settlers was ground.
Later tread mills, water mills and steam mills came into existence
until Staunton had the finest milling facilities, manufacturing the
choicest brand of flour. At the present day there is no milling
system in Staunton.
Many of these old settlers are now buried in the city cemetery.
The city of Staunton is located in parts of Section 29, 30, 31, and all
of 32. When the town was first started in 1831 by the opening of
a store by Stephen J. Hicks it only covered part of section 32 and a
small addition in 29. Four years later the regular streets
running north and south were laid out by David Hendershott and on the
23rd day of February 1859 it was incorporated by special act of the
Legislature and subsequently incorporated under the general law.
Six village trustees and one clerk and a police magistrate were elected
which constituted the first city council.
The city was laid out with a public square in the business center of
the town which was 240 feet square and donated by David
Hendershott. It was set out in trees and adds much to the beauty
of the town. The growth of the town was steady and rapid.
It was fortunate in having for its businessmen, gentlemen of energy and
enterprise who had spared no pains in advancing the interests of the
place.
Note: The author of the above history of Staunton is
unknown. There were several pages of miscellaneous notes that I
combined into one story, but for the most part I kept text, spellings
and grammar “as is”. If you want to view the exact property
descriptions of the original cemetery and additions please check the
file folder for WPA City Cemetery Records located at Staunton Public
Library in Staunton, IL.
