Purchased land in Palmyra in 1835
Originally from Lebanon, Washington County, Kentucky, Joseph and Martha
were married May 23, 1826. They are buried in Old Union Cemetery,
Palmyra, Illinois with five of their young children who preceded them in
death: George Liston 1828-1843, Sarah Ann Liston 1831-1848, John Liston
1835-1848, Susan Mary Liston 1841-1844, and William Thomas Liston
1843-1864. Two children survived them: Joseph B. Liston 1838-1920 and
Albert M. Liston 1848-1892.
Joseph B. Liston became a prominent
businessman in Carlinville and is buried in the Carlinville City
Cemetery with his wife Lucretia Dick Liston. The Liston House sits on
the corner of East First North and High Streets. It was built in 1880
and remained in the Liston family until 1989.
Albert M. Liston
and his wife, Augusta Evans Liston remained on the farm in Palmyra until
his death. He is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery along with two daughters:
Sallie Liston 1878 (Old Union Cemetery) and Elizabeth Liston 1884-1892.
Three children survived them: Zoe Belle Liston Mays Fitchner 1876-1953
of Tallahassee, Florida, Augusta Liston 1877-1960 Jacksonville, Florida,
and Dr. Joseph B. Liston 1880-1950 Carlinville. Dr. Liston is buried in
the Carlinville City Cemetery.
Genealogy background
Joseph Liston was the son of George Liston and Patsey Chandler Liston of
Washington County, Kentucky. George and Patsy were married March 25,
1801. George was born ca. 1772 in Delaware and died in Washington County
in November 1806. Patsey died six weeks later. Patsey was born ca. 1779
in Orange County, Virginia. Joseph and his sister Polly were left
orphans in 1806 with the death of their parents.
Martha Bland
Liston was the daughter of John and Nancy Edmondson Bland. John and
Nancy were married March 15, 1796 in Washington County, Kentucky. John
was born in Virginia and migrated with his family in 1785 to
Nelson/Washington County, Kentucky. He died in 1816, leaving seven young
children for Nancy to care for alone. Martha was only 9 years old. Nancy
was from Orange County, Virginia and accompanied her widowed mother and
family to Kentucky in 1788. She died in Marion County before 1840.
Joseph Liston was the grandson of:
Paternal Side:
Joseph Liston and Mary Blackshear Liston. Joseph was born in New Castle
County, Delaware ca. 1735. He married Mary Blackshear of Kent County,
Delaware ca. 1758 and migrated to Fort James Rogers near Bardstown,
Kentucky in 1779. He died in Washington County in 1807. They were the
parents of five children.
Maternal Side:
Robert Chandler and
Susannah Edmondson Chandler, both of Orange County, Virginia. They were
married February 25, 1774. Robert served in the Revolutionary War. He
moved his family to Washington County, Kentucky in 1788 and died there
in 1806. Susannah Edmondson Chandler was granted a Rev War Pension in
1839 at the age of 95 years. She outlived all but one of their nine
children.
Martha Bland Liston was the granddaughter of:
Paternal Side:
John Bland Sr. The Blands left Virginia and came out
to Nelson/Washington County, Kentucky in 1785.
Maternal Side:
Patty Stevens Edmondson of Orange County, Virginia. Martha was also the
great niece of Patty's brother, Brigadier General Edward Stevens, in
charge of the Virginia Militia during the Revolutionary War. The General
received 10,000 acres of land in Kentucky for his war service and gave
2000 acres to his widowed sister, Patty. In 1788, Patty Edmondson and
her nine children and their families migrated to Nelson/Washington
County, Kentucky. They settled around Cartright's Creek, near Lebanon.
Patty died in 1803. The General died in 1820 in Culpeper County,
Virginia without issue and willed his estate in Virginia, Ohio and
Kentucky to his nine nieces and nephews and their children.

Paternal Side:
Edmund
and Sarah Richardson Liston. Edmund was born in Ducks Creek, New Castle
County, Delaware in 1694. He died in 1760. Edmund and Sarah Liston were
Quakers. Randall and Eve Blackshear of Little Creek Hundred, Kent
County, Delaware. Randall died in 1757 and Eve passed in 1767.
Maternal Side:
Joseph and Sarah Chandler of Orange County, Virginia.
Joseph helped supply the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War.
He died in 1791. Patty Stevens Edmondson of Orange County, Virginia.

Morris and Jane Milcome Greaves Liston. Morris came to
Delaware from England in 1665 on a land warrant from the Duke of York.
Jane Milcome arrived in Delaware on the ship Antelope from Armaugh
County, Ireland in 1682 with her mother and 2 sisters. Morris and Jane
were married June 8, 1685 in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Their Quaker
marriage was recorded in the Middletown Monthly Meeting of Friends. They
settled in Ducks Creek, New Castle County, Delaware. Morris died in 1708
and Jane passed in 1711. Benjamin and Anna Richardson of New Castle
County, Delaware. Benjamin died in 1718.

Timothy and Justine Woolfolk Chandler of Caroline County, Virginia.
Timothy was born 1685 New Kent, Virginia and died in 1757 in Caroline
County. Justine was christened 1706 in Abington Parish, Glouchester
County, Virginia.

Paternal Side:
Ann Milcome, a widow, from Armaugh, Ireland who
arrived in Delaware on the ship Antelope in 1682 with her 3 daughters,
Jane Greaves, Grace and Mary Milcome. They arrived with a certificate
from the Balleyhagen Meeting of Quakers and presented it to the
Middletown Monthly Meeting of Friends, Bucks County, Pennsylvania.
